Krill prototype comes second in the Ocean Hackathon 2023 Grande Finale

Ocean Hackathon is a 48 hour marathon where national teams develop a prototype based on marine data to address a particular challenge.  Teams compete in participating towns and cities around the world and the winning team from each area will go forward to compete in the International Grande Finale currently underway in Brest, France.  This year’s theme is ‘Oceans at Risk’ seeking solutions for some of the main challenges our oceans face heading towards 2030.

Coming second in this year’s Grande Finale is a team from Concepción, Chile.  The team won the Chile semi-final with a project they called ‘License to Krill’, an Artificial Intelligence predictive model based on neural networks that will estimate the krill abundance distribution in the South Shetland Islands, Antarctica.

ARK congratulates the Concepción team - leader Cristian Cofré, and teammates Dantes Arduam, Danilo Astorga, Octavio Mercado, Yanara Morgunovsky, and Matilde Rivas, all from the Universidad Austral de Chile and Matilde Rivas from the Universidad de Chile. We look forward to learning about the results of your project!
